2020 will forever be associated with the start of the Covid-19 virus pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic dominated the headlines and changed our lives for ever. John Mather has created a unique record of this extraordinary but tragic year by charting the year’s key events in over two hundred and thirty black and white illustrations.
As well as featuring the difficult challenges, the resilience of the UK’s National Health Service and the prospect of vaccines offering hope for the future, he provides a background to the virus and includes a history of previous pandemics. He purposefully refers to events in Europe, the Americas and the rest of the world to reflect the global perspective of this terrible pandemic.
He also recognises the contribution of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth’s inspiring address to the nation and the late Captain Sir Tom Moore’s charitable efforts to help lift everyone’s spirit.
John is particularly keen to pay tribute to everyone who has suffered and also thank all medical staff and front life workers who have strived, often without recognition or reward, to keep us all safe.
Although enormous difficulties lie ahead, not least the near herculean challenge of immunising the world’s entire population of seven billion inhabitants, he believes that we must look forward to a day when we can resume a normal life.
John is a retired chartered civil engineer and strongly believes in the therapeutic power of art for overcoming adversity. This is particularly relevant at this present time.
